Grief No One Prepares You For: Living with the Life You Didn’t Plan
When people talk about grief, they usually mean death. They talk about funerals, sudden losses, or clear endings.
What gets lost is the quiet, ongoing grief that happens while you are still very much alive.
It's the grief of receiving a chronic diagnosis and realizing your relationship with your body has permanently shifted. The grief of recognizing that your young adulthood, your career, or your daily routines look nothing like you imagined. The grief of stepping into your authentic identity later in life, while mourning the years you spent hiding or conforming just to stay safe.
We don't talk enough about how disorienting it is to hold two realities at once: building a life forward while quietly longing for the version of your life or yourself that you had to leave behind.
Because this kind of loss doesn't have a clear endpoint, people often try to rush past it. Well-meaning friends tell you to "stay positive," clinicians focus strictly on clinical targets, and society rewards you for pushing through. You might even catch yourself minimizing your own pain, thinking, Other people have it worse; I should just be grateful.
Grief you don't express still has to go somewhere. It shows up as sudden waves of resentment when a routine task feels impossibly hard. It looks like exhaustion, chronic irritability, or a deep sense of emotional numbness. It looks like feeling guilty for being angry at a body or a life scenario you didn't choose.
Therapy is a dedicated space to sit with the complexity without forcing quick solutions, premature acceptance, or superficial silver linings.
Together, we work to honor what was lost, including the spontaneity, the ease, and the expectations you once held. Giving voice to these losses creates room for your life as it exists right now. As we unpack the expectations you’ve had to set aside, the energy once spent resisting your reality can finally be redirected toward building a grounded, intentional future.
I provide telehealth therapy for adults in Colorado and Florida.
